Local Mom and Pop Closing After 81 Years

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- A store that's been around for decades, is shutting its doors in San Luis Obispo. The owners couldn't be reached on their feelings about closing after so long, but the community had plenty to say about it.

Ernest Clement looked through the windows and became transported back in time. "When my wife and I were married 50-something years, we were operating on very little money and we bought our first kitchen table here."

Davidson's has been in downtown for 81 years and now a quarter of it is being used for a Halloween store. The rest will be emptied out, leaving customers wondering why? "I've been here before, I've shopped here before, they do a wonderful job," says Greg Karels, a community member.

Right now the owners aren't saying why, but Lindsay Miller from the SLO Chamber of Commerce thinks this closure is isolated to one store.  "It's really been a thriving downtown in the last couple years, we haven't seen a lot of closing, definitely a lot of businesses opening."

Customers like Ernest Clement say they're saddened by the change in downtown and says this store will always have a special spot in his heart. "We used that table for a long time, you remember little things like that, they are not that significant, but they were good experiences."
