SANTA BARBARA COUNTY – It was a unique animal rescue in Santa Barbara County and it remains a chance for some in the community to step up and help save more than 100 roosters.
Back in December, Santa Barbara County Animal Control discovered more than 400 at-risk chickens, turkeys and pigeons on private property on Camino Cielo Road in Santa Barbara County.
Now there are just over 100 roosters still up for adoption in the County animal shelter near Santa Barbara.
County Animal Control says not everyone can come in and adopt one of the proud birds.
"You have to be zoned in order to be able to house them, roosters don't do well in a city environment, they make a lot of noise and often times annoy your neighbors", says Stacy Silva of the County Animal Shelter in Santa Maria, "if you want one and you're not sure, check with your zoning, your local zoning, make sure you are allowed to have a rooster."
Silva says farmers, ranchers and people with at least several acres of land would ideal candidates to adopt the roosters.
Silva says none of the birds seized, including the roosters, were involved in anyway with anything illegal including cockfighting.
