SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- A new member has been added to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office, but this one has four legs. His name is Dutch and he's the counties first narcotics detention K9. Within his first 4 months of work he's already had multiple drugs finds in and out the jails.
"We go through units daily, we hit random units and clear everyone out, he goes through and sniffs around, basically every part of the unit," says Correctional Deputy Joshua Fischer, Dutch's Handler. Dutch cost 45-hundred dollars, and the sheriff's office paid for him with seized money. Dutch not only searches the jail and juvenile hall, he has sniffed out the court house, the CMC Fire Camp and is used when officers serve search warrants.
Eventually Dutch will be able to search for just about anything. "You can train him to find anything, right now he's only trained to find marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and opium."
