SANTA MARIA - Neighbors say 40 year old Brian Reid had recently moved into his parents home in a quiet Santa Maria neighborhood.
"He was always outside in his jeep, typically just cleaning it, cleaning the inside, taking care of it", neighbor Andrea Miller says of Brian Reid, "I would wave when I drive down the street in my car, he never waved back, it was like hey neighbor, he didn't seem too friendly, not a sociable person."
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department says Reid's abandoned jeep was found on a Highway 101 overpass in Santa Maria shortly after he allegedly shot and killed his father, 73 year old William Reid, and critically wounded his mother, 66 year old Pamela Reid, at a family Labor Day picnic at Orcutt Community Park at Rice Ranch Monday night.
The Sheriff's Department says Reid was arrested when he walked into the emergency room at Marian Medical Center Monday night.
In addition to the first degree murder and first degree attempted murder charges against him, Reid also faces the special enhancement charge of using a gun causing great bodily injury.
An eyewitness has told Central Coast News he saw and heard the Reid family arguing amongst themselves at the park's BBQ area just before he heard gunshots.
Central Coast News has also learned Brian Reid graduated from Santa Maria High School and has at least one child.
Andrea Miller says she and her neighbors are going to reach out and help Pamela Reid when she is released from Marian Regional Medical Center where she is recovering from gunshot wounds.
"It seems its always the nicest people whom tragic things happen to", Miller says about the Reid's whom she described as a very nice couple, "its always a big shock when you find that out."
A motive to the deadly family shooting remains a mystery.
Brian Reid's first court appearance to answer to the murder and attempted murder charges against him has been postponed to Sept. 18.
Reid remains in custody at Santa Barbara County Jail with no bail allowed,
