Officials Believe Panga Boat Drug Smugglers Were Heading East

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif- The head count of people taken into custody Thursday grew to 20 people. On Friday, all 20 were transported to Los Angeles to be arraigned in federal court.

Official's say they believe most of the drugs seized during this panga boat operation were headed east. A lot of times smugglers head for the Midwest because the farther east the drugs travel, the higher the street value. Authorities say the marijuana found on the boat was of low grade and usually can't sell for high enough prices in California.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriffs Office said the bust was a big win for the county to ensure residents safety because with the amount of drugs being transported, it could have had a ripple affect of crime in the area.
