SANTA MARIA - Patricia Reid says she's known her husband Brian since they were in junior high school together in Santa Maria where they both grew up and eventually got married.
Speaking from their home in Arizona, Patricia Reid says she's shocked Brian Reid is charged with shooting and killing his father, William Forest Reid, and wounding his mother Pamela at a family Labor Day BBQ at Orcutt Community Park.
"I couldn't believe it, that's not Brian", Patricia Reid says, "he's always the level headed one, it just blew me away."
Patricia Reid says she and her husband have struggled with marital and financial problems in recent years and that Brian moved back in with his parents in their Santa Maria home a couple of months ago, leaving his three daughters in Arizona with their mother.
But she says Brian Reid returned to his parents home burdened with the knowledge his daughters' claim they were molested by his father and their grandfather during various times they spent together growing up.
"We always had a really close family and we never thought anything like that would have happened in our family", Patricia Reid says, "it just devastated us."
Patricia Reid says in the past seven years she's filed two reports about the alleged molestations with authorities in Arizona but not in Santa Maria or California.
"They told us here that we didn't have to do that", Patricia Reid says, "I asked them that, specifically, do we need to file a report there, they said you do not."
Patricia Reid says nothing has ever been done about the allegations which she says have tormented her husband Brian since he heard of them.
Patricia Reid says she and her daughters are going public with their family's dark secrets to support Brian Reid as he faces first degree murder and attempted murder charges.
"I want Brian to know that he's not alone in this, this is not his fault", Patricia Reid says, "I know how hard it's been, he should not have to suffer for this."
Brian Reid's mother Pamela is expected to make a full recovery from her gunshot wounds.
Brian Reid's arraignment has been postponed to September 18, he's being held in Santa Barbara County Jail with no bail allowed.
