WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- A family vacation turned deadly when a Santa Barbara County teacher was struck hit and killed by a car in the bay area Saturday.
The victim was 52-year-old Sherry Hicks, the lead teacher for Olive Grove Charter School's dual enrollment program at Santa Barbara City College.
The driver is now facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and gross negligence after his pick-up truck jumped the sidewalk in Walnut Creek killing Hicks.
Hicks' daughter-in-law was also hit, and remains in critical condition. Two other people were struck, but their injuries are not considered life threatening.
"Talented, vibrant, a wonderfully loving and supportive person, a treasured wife and mother, Sherry touched many lives. Her absence is already keenly feel. Olive Grove Charter School and Los Olivos School District colleagues are devastated by this sudden and tragic loss," says Steven Foley, President of the Los Olivos School District.
Grief counseling is being arranged by the district for Hicks' students and her colleagues.
