CAYUCOS, Calif.- A usually quiet neighborhood is left shaken up after authorities say a homeless man forced his way into a home and went on a rampage just before 3:00am Tuesday morning.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says 43-year-old Richard Lugo, a transient in the area, broke into a home on the 2200 block of Cass Avenue in Cayucos.
"The victim stated that she heard a man banging on their door and she also stated that the man claimed that he had a gun," says Public Information Officer, Tony Cipolla, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.
The homeowner says his granddaughter and her friend were staying at the home during the break-in. He says someone forced his way through the home, made their way up the stairs, screaming and yelling before destroying items in the home.
"The victim and another woman were able to retreat to a bathroom, lock themselves in and call 911," says Cipolla.
The homeowner says that's when the burglar began throwing items off the balcony and neighbors say they haven't heard of anything like this.
"Not like this, no, it's a pretty quiet neighborhood, not a lot of stuff going on like that," says David Bains, a neighbor.
"The victims in this case did exactly the right thing they were able to retreat to a safe location they were able to call 911 they were able to give good information and that led to the apprehension of a suspect," says Cipolla.
When deputies arrived they found Lugo in the front yard and arrested him.
