Santa Maria
-- People across the Central Coast are remembering 9-11. Santa Maria fire
fighters held special commemorations this morning. All six City fire stations
held a commemoration this morning starting at 7:20. Battalion Chief Rick
Bertram spoke about the courage and valor first responders demonstrated when
the United States was attacked saying, "Just an believable act of courage,
their sacrifice, those things always need to be remembered because that's really
the foundation of this country."
This
morning crews
pulled out the fire trucks, gathered at the flag-pole where the flag was lowered to
half-staff for the day, and observed a moment of silence. This station is one of two in the city that have a
piece of the world trade center. It's displayed on the front of the building
with a plaque. The piece of steel serves as a permanent tribute to the New York
City fire fighters and other first responders who were killed that day in the
twin towers.
Battalion
Chief James Clayton says, "Each one of us can imagine what it would have been
like to be one of those firefighters walking up those stairs not knowing if
you're going to make it out." The Santa
Maria City fire fighters are remembering all the lives lost the morning the
towers were attacked and they are also thinking about all of those who lost
loved ones that day eleven years ago. Nearly 3-thousand people died in the September 11th attacks
and more than 300 New
York City fire fighters were killed when the towers collapsed
