Literacy Volunteers Needed On The Central Coast

Posted: Updated:

San Luis Obispo -- September is international literacy month and the Central Coast is in need of volunteer tutors. The San Luis Obispo County Literacy Council is looking for additional volunteers.

The council has been teaching people to read since 1977. The program relies almost entirely on volunteers  and serves 460 learners right now. The instruction is free of charge for anyone 16 and older. Bernadette Bernardi with the Literacy Council says, "There's a wide range of abilities and knowledge as well as languages we work with people who are English speakers as well as people who are speakers of English as a second language."

According to the national institute for literacy about 17-percent of adults in both San Luis Obispo And Santa Barbara Counties are at the lowest level of literacy. The next volunteer training session in San Luis Obispo is September 22nd.
