SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- At 8 this morning, a cyclist was riding his bike and tried to make a left turn onto Higuera from Ontario road. He then collided with a big rig.

"The bicyclist was ejected from his bicycle," said CHP Sgt. Danny Koetsier. Damian Horstman, landed on one side of the road, his bike ended up on the other. CHP officers said he was hit at speeds of 40-45 miles per hour. Horstman was rushed to the Sierra Vista Hospital, where he is Chair of the Anesthesia Department and Vice Chief of Staff. He was pronounced dead within an hour of the incident.

"Dr. Horstman was a very friendly, infectious person, always upbeat and always helpful, and so as you can imagine it is a very somber day at Sierra Vista and throughout our medical community," said Ron Yukelson, a colleague of Horstman.  Horstman was 39 years old and leaves behind his wife and two children. The investigation is ongoing on who was at fault.
