San Luis Obispo City Leaders Hopeful for IMAX Theater Project

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif-  The lease may be up for the historic Fremont Theatre, but Bruce Sanborn who operates the theatre said they aren't planning on closing.

Sanborn says the building owners will negotiate a possible new lease.

In April IMAX approved the deal to come to the Fremont Theatre building, but the developers didn't move on the project fast enough and must be approved again.

Lindsay Miller from the Chamber of Commerce said she hopes the IMAX becomes a reality because it would help an already thriving downtown.

"Having the IMAX theatre would be incredible, it adds to another opportunity for people to come in have dinner here, enjoy the local wine country and enjoy the theatre." says Miller.

Sanborn says they have already bought the technology to have an IMAX move in. He's just waiting on the developers and the city to move forward.

If San Luis Obispo does get an IMAX theatre it will be the second in San Luis Obispo County.

The only IMAX is at the Hearst Castle Visitor Center.
