SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.-- A car driving northbound on the 101 freeway near Higuera Street veered off the road and crashed into a ditch.
A man was pinned inside.
San Luis Obispo California Highway Patrol responded to a crash just after 4pm.
Two men and a dog were driving in the car before it lost control and rolled over into a ravine on its roof.
Brian Matteson was driving 75 miles an hour when he abruptly slammed the breaks and turned his steering wheel left toward the center divider.
Matteson over-corrected and steered to the right and crossed lane #2, the right shoulder and the left road.
The vehicle shot into the air and landed on its top in a ditch near Higuera.
His passenger, Aaron Lee, 21 was able to climb out of the passenger window.
Matteson was pinned inside the car and suffered moderate to major injuries.
"Some citizens came and pushed the vehicle onto its wheels and assisted one of the gentlemen out of the vehicle," says San Luis Obispo California Highway Patrol Officer Connie Hawkins.
The dog ran across the freeway and was struck.
Passersby helped upright the vehicle and retrieve the wounded dog.
The crashed backed up both sides of the 101 freeway.
Animal control came and took the dog to the vet for medical treatment.
The two men were transferred to Sierra Vista Medical Center for their injuries.
