SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - When an animal is poisoned, many people want to point the finger at someone else. But San Luis Obispo Animal Services Manager Dr. Eric Anderson says those cases are hard to prove.
"Its actually very difficult a lot of the times to determine if these were malicious or if there is something more suspicious going on"
Dr. Anderson said parts of the year where more gardening goes on in the backyard often results in more poisonings.
"Often times actually we may see seasonal changes where people are out gardening. They may be putting out new poisons or pesticides just because its that time of year where they work outside."
This is part of the reason San Luis Obispo County Animal Services said in the last few months cases of animals coming in to be treated for poisons in their system has been on the rise.
Sarah Shaver has three dogs and takes them to Waller Park to play, but she said she has to watch what's around her pets like a hawk.
"It definitely is a struggle handling the pests and keeping a clean, safe environment for the dogs".
San Luis Obispo County has seen 5 cases of animal poisoning in the last two weeks.
