Neighbors React To Orcutt Standoff

Posted: Updated:

ORCUTT, Calif. -- A friendly neighborhood is still in shock, after a nearly four hour standoff caused evacuations in Orcutt.

It's usually a quiet part of Orcutt on Pacific Road but on Friday night  it was anything but.

"You couldn't even breathe there were so many police," says Mike Carroll, "Police just galore. I've seen activity here before but not to this caliber."

Last night, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies were called out to what started out as a fight between 27-year-old Jose Villareal and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Rubi Acevedo  at the Leland Park complex.

"When we arrived at the house, the parolee that was wanted saw the deputies coming into his apartment and he went upstairs and barricaded himself in a bedroom," says Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Lieutenant Erik Raney.

Resources from all across the county were called to assist, at one point even requiring a hostage negotiation team.

In the end, Villareal gave up and came out of the barricaded home peacefully.

For residents like Mike Carroll, that's all that really matters for his neighborhood

"I'm real glad that nobody was hurt in the situation and everything was resolved in a safe manner." says Carroll.

Deputies are still investigating whether or not Villareal was under the influence of drugs, which may have played a part in his aggressive nature.

In addition to resisting arrest, Villareal was charged with parole violations.
