SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A project is documenting the placement and treatment of juveniles in detention centers in 31 states as part of a project to show the public how minors in the juvenile system are treated.
University of California Santa Barbara Professor Richard Ross is snapping photos as part of "Juveniles in Justice."
Children's identities are always protected and the photos never reveal anyone's face.
The project includes pictures of over 1,000 juveniles and administrators at more than 200 facilities in 31 states.
About 70,000 young people are in detention or correctional facilities every day in the United States.
It costs more than $22,000 to incarcerate a juvenile for nine to twelve months in California.
