Party/Affiliation: Democrat
Current Job: Congresswoman

Top 3 Priorities if Elected:

HELPING SMALL BUSINESSES CREATE JOBS

I will put the interests of my constituents first and continue working with Republicans and Democrats alike on behalf of the Central Coast. To create jobs, I've voted for 18 tax cuts for small businesses and voted to cut taxes for the middle class.  We must expand our investments in infrastructure, research and clean energy. And that's what I've done.  Mayor Larry Lavignino and I teamed up to find funding for the Santa Maria Levee.  And I worked with my colleague Elton Gallegly to make sure an air tanker is permanently housed at Santa Maria airport in the event of a forest fire. We must also make college more affordable so that the next generation can compete in this global economy, and that's why I've voted to double funding for Pell Grants and cut the interest rate in half on need-based student loans.

PROTECTING CALIFORNIA FAMILIES AGAINST POWERFUL CORPORATE INTERESTS

To protect middle class families, I voted to crack down on skyrocketing credit card fees, hold Wall Street accountable and stop health insurance companies from denying coverage for preexisting conditions.

ENSURING SENIORS AND VETERANS GET THE BENEFITS THEY HAVE EARNED

Finally, to ensure seniors get the benefits they've earned, I voted against the Ryan Plan to turn Medicare into a voucher program and recent proposals to privatize Social Security.  Instead, I voted to extend Medicare's solvency by 8 years and strengthen Social Security. And we are keeping our commitment to our veterans.  That's why I supported the largest increase in veterans' funding in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration and the post 9-11 GI Bill – the most extensive educational assistance program authorized since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. Working with workers and businesses in every community, I know we can bring our economy back to full strength.
