SANTA MARIA, Calif. -- As gas prices soar, more people are leaving the pump behind and turning to other ways of getting around.
Since gas prices have hit record highs in California, some people are bicycling to save some cash.
"Gas prices affect us everyday. I drive a diesel truck so it's really hard on my pocket," says bicyclist Mark Amarillas.
He rode his bike with his daughter to take her to a burger shop.
"Just a trip from here to my house probably like five dollars just on a trip alone," says Amarillas.
Researchers say last time gas prices peaked in 2008, bike commuting increased 15% across the country.
Gas station employees say they've seen less customers too.
Gas prices have soared the past week after major disruptions at refineries.
"It's just a big game. Oil refineries--there's always something wrong with the refineries. Always an excuse for something to go up," says Amarillas.
Governor Jerry Brown directed the Air Resources Board to immediately allow early sale of winter-blend gasoline which typically isn't sold until the end of month but could help increase the fuel supply by 8-10% and lower gas prices.
But Amarillas says he'll bike even more often to save the cash and pass the pump.
