SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- The clock is ticking with 13 days left to register to vote. Back in May, the voter registrations for hundreds of Cal Poly and Cuesta students were turned in late. This marked the beginning of a fraud investigation by the secretary of state.
Cal Poly's ASI Student Government is very aware of the possible fraud and is doing everything they can to make sure something like that doesn't happen as they go through their registration drive. "Voter registration cards need to be turned in at least every 3 days, so we are going above and beyond to make sure they are there every single day after we do the booth," said Katie Brennan from Cal Poly's Student Government.
The students are unpaid volunteers, and are trained by the county clerk recorders office. "We are requiring one or two of everybody who has gone through the training to be at the booth at all times," said Brennan. Every two years the group sets up shop to encourage students to register to vote. In 2010 the drive registered about 26-hundred students, a Cal State University record.
Many students are excited about this years election. "I think this is a really critical election so I'm excited to vote," said a first time registrar, Dani Berton. "I think it is very important a lot of people complain about what is going on in America and how the economic crisis has burdened them, but if you don't step up and vote, then you really have no place to talk so its all about getting in your vote," said Michael Zamora, a first time registrar.
The registration drive will be going on every day from 11-2 until the registration deadline, the October 22nd.
