ORCUTT, Calif. - Orcutt Academy High School principal Ted Lyon says over 260 students applied to attend the school as freshman last year. The Academy can only take 150 students per grade level, which meant the school turned away 100 students.
"In terms of turning down a large number of students, this was the first year we had to do that" says Lyon.
Part of the reason the Academy thinks it's grown in popularity recently has to do with the charter school's smaller class size and more attention to each student. It's something that it is having a hard time dealing with, as more families want to enroll their kids.
Tomorrow the Board of Trustees for the Orcutt Union School District will vote on whether it should give preference to students who have an Orcutt address when selecting students. But even so, some will be left out.
Board member Kathy Meissner says "we know that even with the lottery, we won't be able to accept all the Orcutt kids".
Meissner expects the decision to favor accepting Orcutt students first.
"It does look like, barring anything substantial, that is going to be the decision tomorrow night."
