Santa
Maria -- October is breast cancer awareness month and local doctors are encouraging women to go get their yearly mammograms. Breast cancer is the most
common cancer in women and thousands of women are diagnosed with the disease
each year. Marvella Boor is one of them. She has been going through treatment
since she learned she had breast cancer back in January.
Marvella
found out she had a very small tumor after a routine yearly mammogram. Since
then this Sunday School teacher has had surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Doctors say the early detection likely saved her life
Marvella
says, "It's very important to have your annual mammograms you never know what
might be hiding in there, my tumor was so small I couldn't have detected in a
self exam."
Marvella
says she has a great support circle of family and friends and she is keeping a
positive attitude. She did lose her hair during treatment, which is common and
she says she sees it as an opportunity to express herself. She says her friends
never know what wig she may show up in next.
