Santa Barbara County Veterans Stand Down on Saturday

SANTA MARIA, California—On October 13, 2012, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Steve Lavagnino and volunteers of the Santa Barbara County Veteran Stand Down Committee are making critical supplies and services available at no cost to homeless veterans and veterans in need.

The Santa Barbara County Veteran Stand Down is Saturday, October 13, 2012, at the Santa Maria Fairpark, 937 Thornburg Street, Santa Maria.

A full semi-truckload provided by the Department of Defense, included cases of blankets, clothes, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, cots, shampoo, canvas bags, and more. The community has also stepped in by donating food, clothing, handmade hats, scarves, lap blankets, wheelchairs, and walkers, Veterans will have the opportunity to take a hot shower or have their hair cut, have a hot meal, talk to a counselor, connect with a support group, or seek legal advice from a lawyer.

Employment resources and Veterans Affairs medical benefit services will be available.

Stand Down can offer hope and resources that are not available on the streets. There will even be pet supplies available for the veterans' furry friends.

The event is an opportunity for veterans to receive services and support with the goal of becoming independent and breaking the cycle of homelessness.

Stand Down runs from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. on October 13.

There will be an opening ceremony at 10 a.m.
