SACRAMENTO,
Calif. -- California Highway Patrol is teaming with law enforcement and
the California Truck Driving Association for the Commercial Vehicle
Safety Alliance's Operation Safe Driver.
The operation runs Sunday, October 14th
through Saturday, October 20th, and aims to target unsafe and aggressive
driving in both passenger and commercial vehicle enforcement
operations.
CHP says as part of the operation, they will
conduct statewide high-visibility enforcement operations on highways and
local roads.
"By participating in education and
enforcement efforts such as Operation Safe Driver, the CHP is striving
to continue to reduce the number of people killed and injured on
California's roadways," said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.
According to CHP, although there has been a
25 percent decline in large truck-involved fatal collisions fro 2007 to
2010, they continue to work daily to save even more lives through
enforcement and education programs, like Operation Safe Driver. In
California, there has been a 40 percent decrease in the number of
collisions involving a commercial vehicle that resulted in the death of a
motorist between 2006 and 2010.
The CHP is encouraging motorists to keep in
mind the following safety tips when driving near a big truck: stay out
of the "No-Zone," which is a blind spot where the car disappears from
the view of the truck driver; stay visible and do not cut into a truck's
space; do not tailgate a truck or speed. The CHP also recommends
allowing plenty of room between vehicles and to always wear a safety
belt.
