Political Action Committee Blasted for Out-of-State Donation - KCOY Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo - News

SACRAMENTO-- Opponents of a ballot measure which would ban some political contributions are blasting a political action committee which supports the measure over a huge donation it received from out-of-state.

The Small Business Action Committee pac received eleven million dollars from a Phoenix-based group called Americans for Responsible Leadership.

Little is known about the group and a spokesperson for the business committee says they don't know where it gets its money.

The Business Committee pac is helping fund support for Proposition 32, the measure which bans unions and corporations from donating directly to state political candidates. It is also helping fund opposition to Governor Brown's tax initiative.

Proposition 32 opponents call the large donation unprecedented and say any group supporting the measure should be more transparent about where it is getting its money.

But a spokesperson for the Small Business Committee says they support Proposition 32 because they want to cut direct ties between politics and special interests. She says receiving donations and spending on political campaigns is constitutionally-protected. She also says her committee made sure the Phoenix-based group was legitimate and in good standing before they accepted the donation.
