Boat Owner Says Panga Boats Are A Growing Problem

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's say another panga boat was found this morning 3/4th of a mile north of Piedras Blancas.

The same area previous panga boats were discovered.

Boat owners say this is a growing problem.

Joey Kenney is a boat owner at Port San Luis. He's lived in Mexico for three years where he says panga boats are very common.

"They're well renowned in Mexico. They're used for fishing, for services of fuel, water taxi services. They are the common Mexican boat," says Kenney.

Now, they're popping up all along the Central Coast.

Law enforcement says this morning a panga was found near Piedras Blancas, an area getting to be known for as drug smuggling corridor.

The boat was found upside down in the surf and had two outboard motors on it.

"Drug dealers are putting several outboards on them. The panga is designed to be a tough boat. They're built very strong and thick and they can handle weight and rough conditions and such," says Kenney.

But Kenney said what these boats are being used for now needs to be stopped.

"Our government needs to wake up and be stronger about guarding our borders in Arizona, and in southern and now in central California," says Kenney.

Nearby the panga were articles of clothing and six containers of gasoline but no suspects were found.
