SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - San Luis Obispo Police respond to a 911 call that turns into an arrest of a man who may have been on drugs and with a loaded rifle.
According to the police Sunday morning around 8:00, San Luis Obispo Police Officers responded to a 911 call of an intruder inside of a residence. 23 year old Collin Fitzgerald believed there was someone inside his residence that was there to do him harm. He then armed himself with a loaded rifle and ran across the street to a neighbor's house to report what was happening. That neighbor called 911 for Fitzgerald. When officers arrived on scene, they checked Fitzgerald's residence and only found his roommate who had been asleep at the time.
Further investigation revealed that Fitzgerald was likely hallucinating due to a long period of time without sleep and the abuse of the street drugs methamphetamine and ecstasy, and that he armed himself with a loaded rifle to defend himself from a non-existent threat.
This morning's incident could have very easily had a tragically different ending and highlights the dangers and unintended side-effects of recreational drug use. Fitzgerald was booked into SLO County Jail and charges of PC 25850(a)- Possession of a loaded firearm in public, and H&S 11550(a)- Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance. Bail was set at $2,000.
