October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. -- The Santa Barbara County Health Department released numbers of infant deaths relates to SIDS in the past two years. 

The department data claims within the county there were 2 confirmed SIDS death caused and 4 unknown causes of death to infants in 2010. In 2011, there were no cases of SIDS, but an increase to 5 unknown causes of death to infants 12 months and younger.

Now the Santa Barbara County Health Department is trying to get the word out about SIDS. They say SIDS is the second leading cause of death for babies between 28 months to a year old. 

 

The health department says some of the undetermined deaths could be linked to bed-sharing. Where babies could have been suffocated unintentionally. Now "Back to Sleep" campaigns have been created by the department to teach parents and the public how to place babies on their when they sleep. Also to make sure children have a firm surface to sleep on.
