Shark Attack Victim Identified, Remembered as a Loving Father and Husband

Posted: Updated:

SURF BEACH, Calif.- A loving father, devoted husband and an avid surfer. That's how neighbors describe 39-year-old Francisco Solorio Jr., the man who was attacked and killed by a shark Tuesday morning at Surf Beach.

A neighbor who lived on the same street of Solorio said, "you know, it just kind of goes to show you that life is real vulnerable, you kind of have to have things in order to deal with the unexpected."

A broken surfboard sits in front of Solorio's Orcutt home where he lived with his wife and 5-year-old daughter. Many neighbors were too overcome with grief to go on camera. Central Coast News went to see if anyone was home at the Solorio's, but no one answered.

One neighbor said, "you know it's unfortunate to what happened to Francisco, you know it's unfortunate to his family."

Warnings are now posted after Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies say Solorio was attacked 500 yards north of the beach entrance where he and three others were surfing.

"The information we have from the friend is that he pulled him out of the water and immediately began performing CPR," says Lieutenant Erik Raney, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.

It was too late, Solario was pronounced dead. Today's attack comes 2-years after 19-year-old Lucas Ransom was attacked and killed by a great white while boogie boarding at Surf Beach.

"I think it's pretty well known locally like you said, that there we have shark sightings up the Santa Barbara coast line frequently," says Raney.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies say Solorio was bitten in the upper torso. The initial investigation determined Solorio was bitten by the shark in the upper torso area.

All beaches on Vandenberg's coastline are closed for the next 72 hours.
