SACRAMENTO – According to a new poll released by USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times, support is dropping for Proposition 30. The poll, which surveyed 1,504 registered voters, says only 46% of voters are in favor of the tax initiative. The number represents a 9-point drop since September. The poll also found that 42% of the registered voters surveyed opposed the initiative.
The proposition would increase the sales taxes by a quarter-cent for four years and would raise the state income tax for those making more than $250,000 a year. Proposition 30, championed by Governor Jerry Brown, would increase tax revenue in California by about $6 million on average each year through 2018-19.
Governor Brown is warning that if the proposition does not pass, he will be forced to implement severe cuts to education. Those opposed to it, claim it does not guarantee money go directly to schools. Opponents also say any tax increase would be a detriment to business, especially given the current state of the economy.
