SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - San Luis Obispo County, is updating it's economic element of it's general plan. According to the Board of Supervisors, the goal is to update it and make it more current.
Here is what the Board did:
On Tuesday, October 23, 2012, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors adopted the updated Economic Element. While not required under state law, San Luis Obispo County originally adopted the Economic Element as part of its General Plan in 1999. The County updated it to make it more current, remove outdated information, and to complement the Clusters of Opportunity Economic Strategy prepared by the business community with assistance from the Economic Vitality Corporation (EVC).
The new Economic Element consists of four high level goals with associated policies. The County will review these goals and policies, as well as the goals and policies in other general plan elements, when taking action on public or private development projects and amendments to ordinances and plans. More specific strategies and actions to foster a vibrant regional economy are described in the EVC's Clusters of Opportunity Economic Strategy. The overall approach of the Economic Strategy and the Economic Element reflects a growing national trend wherein citizens, and in this case business persons, take initiative to identify and implement actions to improve their community. Their actions may be in partnership with government, but they do not expect government to solve all problems for them. A term for such persons is "civic entrepreneur," or someone who acts in an entrepreneurial manner for civic goals.
After the Board of Supervisors adopted the updated element, District 3 Supervisor Adam Hill said: "The Economic Element is yet another important policy development that furthers our County's commitment to a strong and prosperous local economy."
The updated Economic Element becomes effective November 23, 2012. It can be viewed and/or downloaded on the Planning and Building Department website at www.sloplanning.org.
