Early Morning Traffic Stop in Paso Robles, Turns Into Shootout, Officer and Suspect Shot

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - The SLO County Sheriff Department along with several other agencies are on the scene of an officer involved shooting in Paso Robles that took place early Saturday morning. Accord to Sheriff Deputies, at approximately 5:30am the California Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on HWY 101 northbound just south of the North Spring Street exit.

A pursuit ensued and the suspect vehicle took the North Spring Street exit in Paso Robles. The suspect vehicle had a traffic collision at 13th Street/Spring Street and the driver fled on foot.

Officers pursued the suspect on foot and gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and a CHP Officer at 14th Street/Park Street.

Both the Officer and suspect sustained gunshot wounds and were treated at the hospital for their injuries.

The suspect is in surgery, the officer is being treated and expected to be released shortly.
 
This is an ongoing investigation with CHP, Paso Robles PD and the SLO County Sheriff's Department.

Commander Hascall, of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Department says he believes this is the first officer involved shooting in SLO county this year.  He adds there was a CHP officer involved shooting back in South County in 2003 near Los Berros.

CHP major accident investigation team is on scene. No word on how many shots were fired.
Sheriff's dept is collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
