Faulty Electrical Cord Puts Atascadero Home in Flames

Posted: Updated:

ATASCADERO, Calif. - A faulty electrical extension cord ignited a single-story home in Atascadero Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 1:07 p.m. on the 7000 block of Portola Road.  Multiple law enforcement agencies arrived to help, and upon arrival, they found fire and smoke coming from a living room window.  The fire spread to the rest of the interior, as an off-duty Atascadero City Fire Department captain was on scene, dousing the flames with a garden house.  Fire crews then deployed their equipment.

Smoke from the house started spreading into a nearby house, but fire crews were able to ventilate it out of the home, reducing the damage.  After about 25 minutes, they were able to control the fire.

The fire caused about $80,000 worth of damage to the home.  No people were injured, but two cats died in the fire.
