Proposition 36 Passes; Changing The Three Strikes Law

Posted: Updated:

The proposition that changes the law to impose a life sentence only when the felony conviction is serious or violent has passed. Proposition 36 allows re-sentencing of third strike convictions that were not serious or violent.

The financial impact would be saving the state correctional facilities around $70 million every year. Savings could even go up to $90 million over the next few decades. The total amount of money that could be saved could vary significantly depending on other future state actions.
