Prop 37: Food Labeling Fails

Posted: Updated:

Proposition 37 would require labeling for foods sold to people that are made from plants or animals with genetically modified material. The label would indicate whether the food has been changed in a specific way.

It prohibits marketing processed food or other food as 'natural.' The proposition does provide exemptions to some foods.

The financial impact would increase the state annual costs from a few hundred thousand dollars to more than $1 million. The costs would go up to pay for the regulation of labeling of the genetically modified foods.

Other financial impacts could be added costs for violations under the measure.
