Alleged Suicidal Man Causes A Four Hour Standoff in Montecito

Posted: Updated:

MONTECITO, Calif. - An Oxnard man has been arrested for leading Santa Barbara County Sheriffs deputies on a four hour long standoff in Montecito on Wednesday.

Deputies responded to South Jameson Road near San Ysidro Road around 9 a.m.  Deputies found 43-year-old Paul Robinette standing near a parked car, holding two knives to his throat.

They closed off nearby streets and the off ramp and alerted nearby residents to stay indoors.

After repeated attempts to communicate with Robinette failed, the Hostage Negotiation Team, along with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Special Enforcement Team arrived and took over the incident.

The Sheriff's Bomb Team robot was used to approach Robinette with food and water, but Robinette refused.  The standoff ended with the Special Enforcement Team deployed distraction devices and fired several less lethal foam rounds at him, causing him to drop the knives.  They arrested Robinette and transported him to the hospital, where they say he will be medically and psychologically evaluated.
