LOMPOC, Calif. - A half acre brush fire broke out in Downtown Lompoc on Thursday evening.
Lompoc Fire Crews battled the blaze in a ditch near La Honda Elementary School.
Reports of the fire came in just after 5pm. Crews closed off a part of North D Street, but it has since been reopened. They say the location made it difficult to get to.
"You got real thick duff like this, takes a lot of water, a lot of digging," said Battalion Fire Chief Mark Clayton of the Lompoc Fire Department. "Fire gets down in there like a tick, we got to dig it out and just put water on it."
Clayton also mentioned that the area has been a problem area for fires in the past. The last fire there happened a few years ago.
The fire has been contained. Crews spent a couple hours mopping it up, but the scene is now cleared.
