MONTEREY, Calif. -- Stuck in traffic for weeks! Now, a snag in a $5-million project on the Monterey Peninsula.
A part of a new bus stop needs to be re-done.
Things are going smoothly with most of the new Monterey-Salinas Transit jazz routes and stops, except one.
The construction at Aguajito and Fremont in Monterey that was under construction is now going to be delayed several weeks.
"There was an oversight between MST engineers and the city of Monterey planning and permitting staff and we are redoing that work and when you do large construction projects like this these are the types of things that occur," said Carl Sedoryk, CEO of MST.
Construction should've been done by now but the lane isn't large enough for 18-wheelers, so construction is going to take three weeks longer.
Sedoryk said there are contingincies in the budget to deal with situations like these.
But even after years of planning the project, it still will cost up to $10,000 extra to fix, money coming from the state and federal governments.
"It's been decades since some of these streets have been opened up and major construction work like this has happened," Sedoryk said. "What we're finding is over the years there are utility lines, electrical lines, other lines that don't appear on any of the maps that we have available to us today."
The next step in the transit project is to wrap up construction on Lighthouse in Monterey, then start construction in Seaside.
It should all be completed by late January.
