ATASCADERO, Calif. - An Atascadero police officer delivered a baby in the police station parking lot on Tuesday, marking the first time a baby had ever been born at the station.
The baby's father, Chris Devroede of Atascadero ran into the police station lobby around 11:25 p.m. Tuesday night, asking for help. He told one of the department's dispatchers that his wife, Orah, was having a baby in the parking lot.
Without hesitation, Officer Luca Benedetti ran out to see Ora, who was in her car, having serious contractions. He helped her move to the back seat of the car so she could have more room, and then she told him that the baby was coming out. Once the baby was born, he helped untangle the baby's umbilical cord. The baby began to cry, and Benedetti put the baby in his mother's arms.
Orah and her new baby girl were transported to Twin Cities Hospital. Chris and Ora told Atascadero Police that their new baby girl was doing great and weighed in at 8 pounds and 7 ounces.
Police say this is the first time in the Department's 32 year history that a baby was born on the premises. Police say for Benedetti, this is a moment he will never forget.
