California Has Highest Poverty Rate in Country

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California has the highest poverty rate in the country. Nearly nine million Californians, which is about a quarter of the state's residents, live in poverty.

A new measure called the "Supplemental Poverty Measure" was created a year ago and provides a bigger picture of poverty.

The government thinks it can be used to factor living expenses and benefits from tax payers that are left out by the official formula.
