Atascadero Police Officer Delivers Baby In Station Parking Lot

ATASCADERO, Calif. -- An Atascadero police officer goes above and beyond the call of duty after hearing the screams of a woman going into labor in the police station parking lot.

But when a woman and her husband, en route to the hospital and going into labor couldn't make it, Officer Luca Benedetti answered the call.

"It's not something we train for on a daily basis as far as delivering babies but he knew what to do and he did the right thing,"' says Atascadero Police Public Information Officer Gregg Meyer."And it worked out great."

"That's really awesome," says Atascadero student Alyssa Nixon. "I mean that's pretty crazy that he was able to do that and not freak out!"

Benedetti ran out to the parking lot and started helping Orah Devrode and her husband Chris, move to the back seat of their car to delivery the baby.

Not only did Officer Benedetti not only help deliver the baby in this very parking lot, he also noticed it's umbilical cord was wrapped around it's body. He unraveled the cord and baby girl started crying.

"Which obviously is a good sign," says Meyer. "He handed the baby to the mother and just around that time, other officers from our department as well as fire department personnel arrived on scene to assist."

The mom and baby were transferred to Twin Cities Hospital. SOT

"Not every officer would be calm and cool and keep it together," says Meyer. "He's exemplary of what we expect of our officers."

The baby girl was healthy at 8 pounds and 6 ounces.
