Farewell to Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Ho Hos

SALINAS, Calif. -- Say goodbye to the famous golden sponge cake with cream filling.

"I got the last one," said Dave Ross.

Twinkie aficionado, Ross, came to the Hostess Bakery Thriftshop in Salinas, after he heard hostess was closing up shop.

"I came to buy a whole box," said Ross.

But Ross was a little too late, since early this morning crowds flooded the shop, including Tom Polk, who beat Ross to the last box.

"I got about $75.00, mostly ding dongs and ho hos. I got quite a few cupcakes," said Pollk.

Employees who will be out of a job next Tuesday, said today was the busiest they've ever been. But it wasn't just at the local hostess stores who saw the sweet treats flying off the shelves.

At the Star Market grocery store hostess products are running out.

Over a dozen hostess employees were laid off at a central coast distribution center and dozens more will go with the bakery locations.

Though Ross feels bad for the employees who will be out of work he said the issue goes deeper than that, losing twinkies is like losing a piece of himself.

"It's a keepsake, its part of American history and now its gone," said Ross.
