Local Developers to Take a Shot at Fort Ord Land in Seaside

Posted: Updated:

SEASIDE, Calif. - A new look for one small piece of land in Seaside's part of the former Fort Ord. Darryl Choates and two other local developers think they can turn things around for the old Army convenience store.

"Our plans are to renovate the building and put service there that the neighborhood needs," said Choates, former Seaside city councilman.

The building site is one of the five convenience stores that were closed in the 1990s. It sits near Monterey Rd. and Coe Ave. near the Seaside Highlands.

For 15 years, the building has been closed down and been the target for graffiti. But developers have plans to give it a brighter future and change all that soon.

In a presentation to city council last week, the men showed what they would like to put in the rundown building. The plans include a market, retail offices and self-storage. They are services that Choates say are must needs.

"At this time, they have no service they have to travel a certain area, basically go to another city to get what service they need," Choates added.

It's no surprise that some developments have fallen through on the base, however he says their team has something that others have not. All three of the developers are from right here on the peninsula and have plenty of successful experience.

"They are going to do everything they can cause its their neighborhood too, just like every one else."
