Oceano Dunes Group Sues the SLO County Air Pollution Control District

Posted: Updated:

OCEANO, Calif. - The San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District, or APCD, is being sued over the air pollution controversy from the Oceano Dunes. The lawsuit comes from the group Friends of the Oceano Dunes, who say the science behind the pollution studies on the dunes are flawed. But the APCD says the studies are fine and now it's up to a judge to decide.

Today Larry Allen, Executive Director of the APCD, said the lawsuit is a step backward in the fight to control air pollution from the Oceano Dunes. The lawsuit challenges two basic issues of the APCD's pollution control requirements: whether the pollution is actually coming from the dunes and if the science behind the pollution study is flawed.

"This is another bump in the road but we are all professionals," says Allen. "We know how to work in these situations. And I believe State Parks ultimately is going to come to the table and work with us."

The State Parks Department said it has followed all the requirements put on them by the APCD out at the Oceano Dunes despite the APCD saying that they haven't done enough.

The APCD still needs to file it's response to the lawsuit, but the first court hearing is expected to be in January.
