PISMO BEACH, Calif. - Recently constructed seawalls along Shell Beach coastline were built to protect the coastal bluffs. Now the California Coastal Commission is stepping in to question the city's decision of whether the walls should be there at all.
The Coastal Commission says the seawalls could cause a narrowing or elimination of beach areas over time. They also question the need for one seawall in particular.
Last year the Coastal Commission disagreed with Pismo Beach over whether the seawalls were necessary and whether the area where they would be built was even completely in the city's jurisdiction.
The seawalls were finished in August, part of a $2.3 million project.
Central Coast News couldn't get in touch with the two commissioners who filed the appeal for the Coastal Commission to discuss whether they feel the seawalls should be taken down completely. Pismo Beach Community Development Director Jon Biggs said the city has been in close contact with the commission and will continue to closely work with them on the issue.
The Coastal Commission has its next meeting in Pismo Beach in January. It could decide to take control of the project then.
