MONTEREY, Calif. -- The waves, the sand, and the sun, all describe your average day at any Monterey beach. But this time of year, expect to run into Mola Mola, or you may know it as Sun Fish.
What could be causing the high numbers on Monterey's shores?
"The sea lions are grabbing the Molas and toss them in the air like Frisbees, since they are a flat fish and they start feeding on them," said Nancy Black, Marine Biologist for the Monterey Bay Whale Watch.
Black said the Sun Fish are closer to the coast because its getting warmer on the coast. Sea Lions quickly go where the food and toys are.
The most popular place to see Sea Lions feeding and playing is actually right along Cannery Row.
"That's probably what you're seeing washing up shore, it's what left of the Sea Lions," said Black.
Sea Lions aren't the only ones feeding on Mola, Seagulls are actually joining in to feed on the high number of Sun Fish.
"You'll see a big congregation of birds there always birds there, and sea lions are tossing up the fish and it splashes and the birds get what's left," said Black.
The amount of Sun Fish washing on shore is the highest it's been in some times, the last time numbers were as high was in 2009.
