Woman Accused of Vandalizing Church Appears in Court

Posted: Updated:

SANTA MARIA - 24 year old Amanda Ruiz has had her arraignment on felony arson and burglary charges postponed for a second time.

Santa Maria Police say earlier this month, Ruiz broke into the St. John Neumann Catholic Church early in the morning, shattered stained glass windows, set fire to church books and collection baskets and desecrated a church statue.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found smoke billowing out of the church and Ruiz playing the piano inside.

Police believe Ruiz was under the influence when she was arrested and say they found drug paraphernalia inside the church.

Ruiz will return to court next week for her arraignment, she remains in Santa Barbara County Jail with no bail allowed.
