An Apartment Fire Leaves College Students Without A Home During Finals Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department said more than a dozen students have been displaced during finals week from a fire that started in an apartment bathroom.

The fire happened on the 1200 block of Murray Street. Firefighters said smoke was coming from the bathroom. The fire burned in parts of the bathroom and the attic. Firefighters said the fire was in only one of the apartments.

The fire department said because of the damage to the main electrical supply, the entire building has to be evacuated. Firefighters said since the building is untenable because it cannot be re-supplied with electricity.

The woman living in the apartment were the fire started said her carbon monoxide detector went off earlier in the day before smoke filled the apartment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
