SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A freight tractor hit and killed a pedestrian on the 101 Freeway who walked into oncoming traffic on Thursday afternoon.
California Highway Patrol initially responded to a call of a possible hit and run collision around 3 p.m. on the southbound lanes near San Luis Bay Drive.
Once authorities were on scene, they determined that the 49-year-old San Luis Obispo man initially pulled to the right shoulder of the freeway, left his car, and walked out into traffic lanes directly in front of oncoming traffic. He was then struck by a 2006 Freightliner truck tractor that was towing a semi trailer.
Authorities say the pedestrian had major injuries. An ambulance transported him to Sierra Vista Hospital, but the man was pronounced dead around 3:40 p.m.
CHP did not shut down the 101 Freeway because of the incident, but it did cause major traffic delays in the area. It is not known why the man walked into oncoming traffic. Anyone with more information is urged to call SLO CHP at (805) 593-3300.
