PASO ROBLES, Calif- Paso Robles city leaders have announced a finalist in the running for the city's Police Chief position. The city has chosen a 29 year Captain from the San Diego Police Departments Northwestern Division, Manuel Guaderrama, as their top candidate. Paso Robles City Manager Jim App said over sixty applicants were interviewed and Guaderrama displayed management skills that would be fit for Paso Robles.

Paso Robles Police Chief finalist Manuel or "Manny" Guaderrama is stepping in after a scandal, and he plans to change the cities perception of the police department. "I want to hear what their perception is of the police department, their perception of what the crime problems are, and then really take a look at how we are going to address that, listen to what they have to say and let them see how we respond to their concerns," said Guaderrama.

Some concerns already voiced by residents is the lack of patrol . "I'll take a look at how we deploy our patrol officers are we doing it in the most efficient manner," said Guaderrama.   Another concern by the city is the increasing gang problems, Guaderrama has experience managing gang suppression teams in San Diego. "There are a lot of different strategies, working with schools, community based organizations and of course doing traditional suppression enforcement activities," said Guaderrama.

Although very experienced, Guaderrama acknowledges he's made the spotlight himself for things outside of his job duties.  His 23-year-old son got in trouble for allegedly groping two woman outside a bar in Pacific Beach.  "My son is an adult and he has to answer for his behavior on that particular night, I love my son but its his responsibility to deal with that," said Guaderrama.

Guaderrama said nothing will deter his focus in his new home. "My vision is that the Paso Robles police department provides professional service and we become the safest community or safest city in our region."

The city is finishing its extensive background check on Guaderrama, once that is finished he is expected to assume the role of chief by mid January.
