Food, clothing and shelter. They're considered the basic necessitates. But some argue cell phones should be added to that list.

Homeless and other poor people in California are on track to soon get virtually free cell phones and service so they can keep in touch with family, potential employers and others crucial to improving their lives.

The cell phones would be handed out through a federally funded Lifeline program. It's already operated by service provider Assurance Wireless in 36 other states. The program is likely to win final approval in the next couple of weeks from the California Public Utilities Commission.

""In this world you can't do anything without a cell phone," said Bay Area homeless man John Gallagher.

The only cost to the homeless is a monthly service fee. In other states the average is $9.25.

Central Coast News spoke with several homeless shelters around the Central Coast and got mixed reviews on the idea of free cell phones.

A Monterey shelter said this would be a lifeline for anyone in the time of a crisis, especially homeless mothers with children.

On the other hand, one Salinas shelter said free cell phones may just create a connection to drug dealers.
